Guinea Pigs are available to purchase as pets from one of three sources: from a pet store, Guinea Pig rescue shelter or Guinea Pig Breeder. Choosing the right source before purchasing a pet is just as important as choosing the right pet.
Pet Stores
Many pet store employees are not educated in the care of all the animals they sell, which is why many wind up keeping Guinea Pigs with Rabbits – this is never recommended. Guinea Pigs purchased from a pet store are often timid with people, and if improperly cared for they can have a multitude of health problems. Choose a reputable pet store that keeps well cared for animals, has employees that are knowledgeable, and houses Guinea Pigs in their own area.
Breeders
When making the decision to go through a private breeder, consideration again must be given as to the reliability of the source. People coming to purchase a pup should be welcomed to see all of the Pigs available, as well as their parents. If adults appear to be well fed and cared for, the breeder is likely a reputable source, however if they appear otherwise it would be best to look elsewhere.
Rescue Shelters
Adopting a Guinea Pig from a rescue shelter can be the most rewarding experience: a needy Pig gets a good home, and the money paid will go toward caring for other Pigs in need. If age doesn’t matter, this is one of the best sources for finding a pet Guinea Pig.
