One of the reasons why Sydney is a great place for a holiday vacation is because of the excellent beaches that are only a short walk or cab or bus ride from the city. One of them is Bondi Beach, a very popular beach, which is located in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, Australia. The word “Bondi” or “Boondi” is a native word which means “water breaking on rocks” or “noise of water breaking over rocks”, while the Australian Museum recorded Bondi as the “place where a flight of nullas took place”.
Approximately one kilometre long, Bondi Beach receives many visitors over the entire year. In 2004, an adventure rating was given to Bondi Beach by Surf Life Saving Australia. The north end of the beach is normally reserved for surfing, while the southern side is known as the “Backpackers’ Express” because of its closeness to a bus stop.
Fairy penguins are sometimes seen swimming nearby the shore. Dolphins and whales are noticed during migration months in the bay. The photo shoot for ‘The Guinness World of World Records’ with 1,010 women wearing bikinis was set at Bondi Beach in 2007. The City to Surf Fun Race is held every year in August, which attracts more than 63,000 participants for the 14 km run – from Sydney’s central activities district to Bondi Beach. Other annual activities that are held at the beach are Flickerfest, Australia’s Academy Award short film festival, World Environment Day, and Sculpture By The Sea. Moreover, Bondi Beach also hosted the competition for beach volleyball at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Many British and Irish tourists spend Christmas in Bondi. Numerous events and festivals have made Bondi Beach a famous tourist destination and attraction.
