The bird which belongs to the category of passerine birds is also known as Carduelis cannabina scientifically. It also belongs to the finch family and quite common in the regions of Asia, Africa and Europe. The bird is a resident type but migrates during winter season towards the southern areas. The bird prefers to live around open areas which have lot of exposure towards bushes and small shrubs in which it loves to hide itself and move around. The bushes and thick covers also do help it during breeding season and for security reasons also.
The bird has a tendency of making huge groups and moving with them. They also love to breed in flocks of huge numbers. There are situations when they have been seen mixing with a group of finches during breeding. These birds can also be observed around swamps and costal areas in huge flocks.
The bird is quite small and slim built with a lengthy tail. The top parts of the body are brownish in tone with the colour on the throat being sullied white. The bill is also in the grey colour with the nape also in same colour. The head also may have a red patch on the top and the breast also shows a sign of reddish patch which become symbolic of male during summer time. Normally the female counterpart and the juveniles won’t have those patches and apparent red colour; they may on the contrary have white colour breast and the streaked buff on the breasts. The songs of this bird can be a fast one with lot of twittering sound in between. Looking at the statistic, it can be around 13 cms in length with a wingspan of almost 25 cms while the wings are fully open. The bird can weigh up to 20 grams. These are present through out the year and live in flocks. During their breeding also they can be seen in huge flocks.
Because of their common living and being quite famous, the birds name has also been used in major football clubs and also the south Wales team have got their nickname also on this bird.
The birds feed on the ground and they prefer to move through low lying bushes and shrubs which make it easier for them to move around. The bird prefers seeds and it can even handle a medium sized seed and can break them easily. They can also munch on weeds and during need, they can try some small variety of invertebrates for their regular diet.
The birds make their nest out of wool and hair and can gather lot of twigs and grass which is available freely all around their habitat. The bird lays eggs which are non-glossy in appearance with a pale blue colour. The look can also have purple tone in it with some brownish spots in them. These eggs can be around 18 by 13 mm in size. The female bird takes the complete responsibility of incubating the eggs while after the young one comes out, both the parents take care of feeding the juvenile.
