Ellis Island is one of the great historical places located in New York Harbour. The island is a former gateway to the United States for more than 12 million immigrants between 1892 and 1954. The long-disused buildings were restored and transformed into the Immigration Museum in 1990.
Visiting this museum is very popular among travellers. It is also an exciting destination for children, especially during the summer. Parents can easily share good memories with their kids. They can experience journeying the past through several displays and exhibits depicting the period when immigrants from Europe travelled the Atlantic Ocean by means of an ocean liner. Most of the exhibits feature audio components that are appealing and interesting to children. School-age children between 5-12 years old can enjoy a 30-minute interactive play entitled ‘Taking a Chance on America: Bela Luqosi’s Ellis Island Story’, performed throughout the day by live actors for a $6 ticket. They can complete various activities during their exploration, using the Ellis Island Junior Ranger Programme, a free booklet available at the information booth or that can be printed online. At an early age, they can also learn the excitement of studying their ancestry through several resources, including Genealogy Workshops, the American Family Immigration History Centre, the Historical Research Centre, and the American Immigrant Wall of Honour. The whole family can enjoy a picnic on grassy areas or choose from a wide variety of foods offered, including hamburgers, veggie wraps, coffee drinks, beverages, fudge, and ice cream.
Kids will never get bored on Ellis Island. Education and enjoyment are really possible!
