Coping with the Firsts as a Non-Smoker

Everything seems different once you stop smoking. Many of the events you enjoy will also seem different. Getting through each event for the first time may seem to be a daunting task. However, there are ways to get through these events without fearing a relapse to your old smoking habits.
Prepare in Advance
When you are going to an event where people will be smoking, decide on a plan of action before attending the event. If smoking is only allowed outside, stay inside to alleviate the temptation. Also, keep a pack of gum or some hard sweets close by to keep your mouth busy.
Keep a Positive Attitude
If you go to an event believing you will relapse, there is a 91 percent chance you will smoke at least one cigarette. Positive thinking is an important weapon in your cessation arsenal.
Think about a motivational phrase that will help you avoid smoking. This may be something as simple as saying, “The money I save from smoking will buy me that trip to Tahiti”, every time you are tempted to smoke.
Bring Help
Take someone to the event that can help keep you on track. It is best that this person is not a smoker, as you need someone who can stay in the smokeless areas with you.
If you do not have anyone who is suitable, mingle with other attendees and find a group of people who are non-smokers. Hang out with them while you are at the event.
