Finding Places to Light Up Becoming More Difficult for Smokers

Smoking not only affects a smoker’s health, but also the health of all the people around them. Because of this, in the US many states, cities and municipalities have placed bans on smoking in certain areas. Some companies have followed suit and done the same thing.

Some smokers have reported that these bans are a violation of their rights. In every case through January 2009, the bans have remained in effect. Judges realise the importance of protecting citizens’ health. They have ruled that a smoker does have the right to smoke but non-smokers also have the right to clean air. Thus, the smokers must find areas away from others to smoke.

These bans are beneficial not only to adults but also to children. When a family goes into a restaurant to eat, the smoke from the smoking section can mix with the clean air from the non-smoking section. Even a tiny amount of smoke can have an affect on a young child’s lungs.

In the UK adults cannot smoke in workplaces or locations such as bars and nightclubs. Many public houses provide smoking areas outside the premises.

An indirect effect of these bans is that smokers are reducing the amount they smoke, if not quitting completely. This is especially true during inclement weather, as the smokers do not want to have to stand in the rain, snow or extreme temperatures to smoke. In the end, it all comes down to deciding what sacrifices you are willing to make for your habit.
