One of the most difficult things for a smoker to deal with during cessation is the lack of hand activity. The need to keep the hands busy is a strong urge that the smoker has to deal with throughout the cessation program. Here are some ways to cope with this need:
Carrot Sticks
Many smokers hold on to pencils or pens in the place of cigarettes. Many of them chew on the writing utensils. However, neither of those items is good for your teeth. A better option is chewing on carrot sticks. As a bonus, the beta-carotene in the carrots is good for your skin and eyes. Moreover, you get a full serving of vegetables each time you want to take a puff on a cigarette.
Lollipops
For smokers who enjoy “taking a drag” or the inhaling part of smoking, sucking on a lollipop may be the best physical replacement for smoking a cigarette. While it will not be exactly the same, it is a similar motion. Choose sugar free lollipops if the cravings are frequent.
Deck of Cards
A deck of cards may seem like an unusual replacement for cigarettes. However, a deck of cards was the most popular item used in a study at the University of Maryland Medical Center. Participants were given a deck of cards and told to shuffle them during cravings. The movement of the hands, along with the concentration needed to shuffle, helped the smokers get through the cravings without reaching for a cigarette.
