Appetite suppressants are slightly more credible than slimming pills, as long as you’re looking at prescription ones. Chances are, if it’s prescribed to you by a doctor, it holds some weight, no pun intended.
As with most “diet pills”, the over the counter stuff is a waste of money. The over the counter stuff is packed full of ingredients with fancy names that have no effect other than making you think it’s working. It’s what we like to call a placebo effect.
Prescription drugs, on the other hand, are more commonly based on scientific findings. One such prescription drug that is clinically proven to have a positive effect is sibutramine (Reductil). What sibutramine essentially does is increase a certain chemical in your brain that makes you feel full faster. After all, our brain controls everything in our body, why shouldn’t a pill that actually works do something with our cerebral faculties,
In more scientific terms, sibutramine is a neurotransmitter reuptake inhibitor, which diminishes the reuptake of serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine, which actually increases the levels of these chemicals in synaptic clefts and helps to augment the feeling of being satiated or full.
Common side effects that come with taking sibutramine include dry mouth or an odd taste in the mouth, nausea, upset stomach, constipation, trouble sleeping, dizziness, drowsiness, menstrual pain, headaches, and sometimes an increase in appetite. There is the possibility of sibutramine raising the patient’s blood pressure as well. Studies are ongoing, researching reports of sudden death, renal failure, heart failure, and gastrointestinal problems, so as one can probably guess, this is not something to be taken lightly.
Once again, always consult your doctor before undergoing any kind of procedure or going on any kind of medication, and make sure you go over the risks and side effects so as to ensure that you’re fully aware of the worst case scenario, what to expect, as well as to make sure you really want to do it. As I’ve said previously, these are not preferable weight loss solutions, and one should always maintain a healthy diet and level of exercise for the best results.
