Symptoms of Grumpy Old Man Syndrome

The Grumpy Old Man Syndrome (also known as the Irritable Male Syndrome or IMS) is the term coined to describe a testosterone hormonal imbalance. According to experts, most men think that the decline or fluctuation in their testosterone level is very unmanly, and though they know that they are experiencing IMS, they simply deny its existence and refuse to seek medical help. IMS involves the chemical, hormonal, and physical changes that men experience, and although it may affect men at any age, it is more common in men between 40 to 60 years old.

Some of the common symptoms of IMS include irritability, depression, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, flushes and sweats, weight gain, insomnia, decreased bone and muscle mass, irrational jealousy, decreased libido, moodiness, forgetfulness, and suicidal thoughts. The main cause of IMS is hormonal level imbalance. Testosterone levels may be higher at night and lower in the morning. Sometimes levels fluctuate about four to five times an hour, but these hormonal changes could be related to depression and stress.

Furthermore, certain additional factors could aggravate IMS symptoms, such as improper diet, smoking, drinking alcohol, and being overweight and daily stressors, including heavy traffic and work. Although the natural symptoms can be controlled by regular exercise, progressive relaxation, and diet modification, the serious symptoms may require hormonal replacement therapy.

It is recommended for men experiencing IMS to consult a physician and start controlling the symptoms before the situation gets worse.
