Breast Reduction



The hormones, genes, weight as well as the frame of the bosy dictates the size of breast present in humans.

In normal cases, the size of the breast in women will be in proportion to the frame of their body. But there are cases where certain women have very large breasts. This can result in causing discomfort physically to the women. They will also under psychological distress.

Breast reduction in female is the surgical method of the removal of the excess glandular, fatty tissue as well as the skin for reducing the volume and weight of the breasts. This method is medically termed as mammoplasty.

Over sized breasts develop during the adolescent age due to the over sensitiveness of the body to the oestrogen, the female hormone. In some cases the large breasts develop in the later phase of her life after the menopause. Large breasts also develop due to the usage of hormone replacement therapy.

There will be a noticeable difference in the shape or size of both breasts, in certain women. The woman may need to undergo surgery to reduce size or shape of the breast which is larger.

Breast reduction is not so important for the health of any woman. Hence it is called as cosmetic surgery. Certain conditions must be satisfied for a person to undergo mammoplasty. One must justify the need and intention for undergoing mammoplasty. Only if the reason is satisfactory, the mammoplasty is done.

There are chances that a person who has undergone mammoplasty has lesser chances of developing breast cancer.

Breast reduction in males

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure which is not restricted only for women. There are cases where may tend to have large breasts. In such cases, those men with large breast can undergo the surgery for the reduction of the breasts. This surgical procedure is termed medically as gynaecomastia.

The breast reductions in females are carried out either to reshape or resize the large breasts. Sometimes, both are done. But in men, breast reduction or gynaecomastia is usually performed for flattening the breast area.

The usual belief for larger breasts in men is because the person is very much obese. But there are other causes which lead to this condition. A imbalance in the hormones can result in the abnormal growth of the glandular tissue of the breasts. If oestrogen, the female hormone is produced in large quantity, this can cause an enhancement in the growth of breasts in men.

Men tend to develop large breasts due to many other reasons. Some of the triggers that lead to this condition are:

Consumption of alcohol in excess quantities
Usage of drugs namely the anabolic steroids which are used for body building purposes.
The sagging of the skin due to excessive weight loss

The procedure of breast reduction in men and women are the same. But it recovers only one hour to complete gynaecomastia. The time taken for recovery is also same in men as well as women. The men are advised to wear a pressure garment, which is elastic in nature for almost four weeks after the surgery.
