The Lincoln Memorial, situated on the National Mall in Washington, D.C., is a US presidential memorial that was built to honour President Abraham Lincoln.
The building is in Greek Doric temple form. Inside the temple sits immortalised in marble the 16th President of the US: the nation’s preserver and Great Emancipator in the Civil War. The statue is 19 feet 9 inches tall and 19 feet wide. On the wall at the back of the statue, above Lincoln’s head, a dedication can be read: “In this temple, as in the hearts of the people for whom he saved the union, the Memory of Abraham Lincoln is enshrined forever.”
Two famous speeches of Lincoln are also inscribed on the wall of this building. These are the Gettysburg Address and his Second Inaugural Address. The memorial is also a place for numerous popular speeches, such as ‘I Have a Dream’ by Martin Luther King.
