A common condition which happens in the arteries is known as Raynaud’s phenomenon and is referred to as Raynaud’s. During this condition, the vessels which are responsible for carrying blood to the skin are attacked and suddenly result in low amount of blood reaching to the hands. As a result, the patient sees a severe change in body condition. They may see whitening of fingers, feeling of pins and needles, hands going numb and cold. As the condition takes a toll on the body, the colour may also change to blue and eventually as red and it becomes quite a painful experience for the person undergoing it. The causes of this condition are not clear and can not be attributed to a particular disease or condition in the body. As per the statistics, there could as many as 10 million people in the country who have been found affected with the condition. Women have been seen as major victims in comparison to men in this condition. A bad thing about this condition is that people are not aware of it and normally don’t consult a doctor, since they feel its something which is just routine numbness.
Symptoms
The condition can affect to different extents and so the symptom varies around it. The condition is normally not very hurting in nature and comes with mild symptoms. This is named to be a primary type of raynaud. The other type of the condition, the secondary type is a severe cause and would need immediate attention. The basic symptoms of this condition start from fingers changing colour and turning white, and eventually blue in colour. The feeling of numbness gets into the hands too. The reason is unavailability of oxygen to the body part, due to improper movement in the arteries. If the condition is a primary one, the extent of the affect would be up to the hands and fingers and numbness they experience and change in colour. In a severe situation, the condition leads to the same affect in the nipples, tongue, or nose to earlobes. The condition in its severe forms could also attack the joints and cause swelling and pain in those areas.
Causes
Normally people with this condition have a little more sensitivity towards the fingers and toes and would normally overreact during cold conditions. The arteries would narrow down further and the blood supply reduces causing the condition. The symptoms can surface on slight change in temperature for these patients. Also emotional conditions like anxiety and lot of emotional imbalance can cause the condition. The primary condition has no connection with any previous conditions or ailments. The only inference medical science makes is that it may be related to some genetic hereditary condition of the family. The secondary raynaud’s, which is a severe type, is caused by the thinning of the arteries and blood vessels not being able to supply blood to the parts of the body.
Treatment
One can take self care by quitting smoking and keeping the body warm. Also proper medication may be recommended by the doctor. The patient may also need some counselling to confront any mental stress which could also be causing this condition.
