An unpleasant sensation in the person’s leg and a huge desire to move them; this type of disease is known as Restless legs Syndrome, also known as Ekbom Syndrome. As per the medical history; Restless legs syndrome was recognized in early seventeenth centuries. As per the survey conducted; it was known that in UK over 1.5 million people are suffering from this syndrome. Women as well as the older people are one of the major victims of this disease. This will occur when there is no movement in the limb but it will get better when the limbs start moving.
Symptoms
Restless legs syndrome does not involve severe symptoms and differs from person to person. Symptoms of this disease are uncomfortable, disabling or sometimes irritating. They include uncomfortable sensation between the legs and desire to move the leg usually, uncomfortable feelings like tingling or prickling sensation. Symptoms usually occur when the limbs are at rest at the time of sitting, lying or sleeping. These symptoms are in the form of electric currents or itching bones. After the limb movement; it gets completely treated. People’s sleep gets disturbed due to the daytime fatigue.
Causes
The exact cause of this syndrome is still unknown but as per studies it was established that due to imbalance of a brain chemical known as dopamine, the condition takes place. When humans rest their limbs, the level of the dopamine gets decreased which affects the movement afterwards. Another reason for the Restless legs syndrome can be the lack of iron. As per the medical history and studies, it was found that after the age of 50, the symptoms tend to worsen and the frequency increases too. This condition has a strong relation to genetics too which is hereditary. Some more causes of this condition can be sort of kidney malfunction or failure, anaemia, alcoholic tendency or pregnancy. There are lots of drugs available which can also become a cause for this condition temporarily while taking treatment for some other ailment.
Diagnosis
In case one feels he is suffering from this condition, they can check for some of the common symptoms. Urge to move around, aggravation of sensation after movement and experiencing pain during the evening could be the directives to confirm the condition. The doctor should help you diagnose the condition by considering the medical history, and asking some queries to detect the actual condition. In severe state, the problem can really unsettle the patient and so the intervention of the doctor becomes inevitable. The condition can also cause deferred sleep and this could also be taken into consideration, while the diagnosis is done.

Most of the variations of this condition are mild in nature and as the patients realize that, a little change in their daily habits or a treatment can relieve the condition. In those cases where the condition is severe, there may be a two pronged approach needed including working on the lifestyle as well as the medication part simultaneously. Smoking should be one the main reasons behind lot of condition and should be avoided here too. Also maintain good sleep, body workouts with exercises and reducing the intake of tobacco or caffeine can help recover from this syndrome faster.
