Though it only opened in five theatres and was met with less than stellar reviews by the critics ‘The Boondock Saints’ has gone on to become something of a cult classic and its exclusive DVD release by Blockbuster hailed the tag line “Are the Saints good or evil,”
The film is loosely based on the real life experiences of director/writer Troy Duffy in Los Angles and debuted in 1999.
The film centres around two fraternal twins, Murphy and Connor McMurphy. It opens during the funeral of Kitty Genovese, a real individual and victim of a brutal crime. The brothers feel touched by the homily where man’s indifference is viewed as much a crime as committing the crime itself. They leave the church after kissing the feet of the crucifix, convinced the priest is on their side and have been blessed for their future actions. Seen as a message from God, they decide to become vigilantes and clean up the streets of their Boston. This is a difficult decision for the boys, who are strict Catholics, but after the Russian mafia infiltrate their bar on St. Patrick’s Day, the boys are forced to defend themselves and the bar.
They eventually kill the thugs, with one memorable scene of Connor dropping a commode off a roof, killing one of the mobsters and rescuing Murphy.
The strong Irish brogue is a bit difficult to comprehend for the untrained ear, but the film is well deserved of its faithful following and is sure to make you ponder, are the “saints good or evil,”
