Carver is one of those movies that the second it begins, I realize that it will be about the things which I absolutely detest! First, we are informed that the film we are about to watch is based on a true story. Ok, agreed that this old gag has been used hundreds and hundreds of corny horror movies but its still succeeds in exasperating my finely tuned sensibilities. The second unforgivable sin they commit is proclaiming “Audiences will be chilled to the bones by THE SCENE from Carver.” I will touch upon that SCENE later.
There’s nothing new in terms of the story. Of all of the camping sites in America, four campers choose one with the shadiest past. What’s bizarre is that they never bother to tell us what’s so shady about the camp. What happens next can be guessed by a six year old. They find some old snuff films they think are some poorly shot, low budget horror films. But after they sit through two of them they know their lives are in mortal danger.
What follows is the usual psycho-slasher material. But despite being cliché, there are a few parts that I actually enjoyed a lot. Those few parts begin when the slashing starts. The special effects and gore shown in the movie were really well shot. So if you are merely interested in watching psychotic, bloodthirsty villains kill a bunch of people, don’t waste time and just quick fast-forward to the interesting part. However, the much-hyped SCENE isn’t that outrageous after all. In fact it was probably the silliest bit of CGI work I have seen in a long time.
