“You can’t spell families without lies,” says Brad (Vince Vaughn) in this season’s newest take on the “meet the parents” premise. The movie has been released as ‘Four Holidays’ and ‘Four Christmases’ so don’t get confused like I did. They’re actually the same!
Both Brad and Kate (Reese Witherspoon) have avoided the inevitable holiday meeting of each other’s families for three years now. Both their parents are divorced so spending Christmas with them would mean…what else, “Four Christmases!” Yes, they couldn’t have picked a more innovative name!
So anyway, Brad and Kate have come up with (what they think is) an ingenious plan to avoid the annual uncomfortable holidays. They lie to their parents and say they are headed to third world countries for charity work while actually heading off to exotic vacations.
But the twist in the tale is this year San Francisco airport is fogged in and the couple are caught out. Their worst nightmares come true and they have to celebrate Christmas four times over!
The fun of the movie is watching these two squirm as they meet their own and each other’s parents. These Christmases are meant to help Brad and Kate figure out exactly what their own future holds and whether their relationship has a future at all. Although, the movie doesn’t exactly explore these issues very deeply.
It isn’t the best romantic comedy around and it walks down a well-beaten track but it packs in a few good laughs and is a good watch for the holiday season.
