If I am made to watch another movie that has a nuclear power plant as its central theme, I will scream my lungs out. Someone I know actually described ‘Dance of the Dead’ as one of the greatest horror comedies ever’. I was too shocked to give an articulate reply. Yes the movie has its moments, and I rather liked the way in which the zombies seemed to just pop out, run like triathlon athletes and rip each others face. However, the better part of the movie was unfunny, boring and unexciting.
This is how the story progresses. It’s prom night and local kids are praying to get lucky and lose their virginity. Meanwhile something stirs at the local cemetery and it’s up to a bunch of high school kids to save their prom night from turning into an all-you-can-mangle zombie fest. Yes, you guessed it. There’s absolutely nothing new in the movie and the story is as predictable as one can imagine. However, if I were asked to cite any one thing that I liked about the movie, it would have to be the casting. Usually one sees a 25 year old playing an 18 year old in these ‘high school’ comedies and audiences are immediately able to see through it. In the ‘Dance of the Dead’ an 18 year old plays an eighteen year old. This gives the movie a certain freshness that almost rescues it from its mediocrity. If your favourite genre happens to be ‘desperate sex starved teens’ and ‘zombies’ then you just might enjoy the movie. Unfortunately I am not crazy about either…
