The French movie ‘Emmanuelle’ was released in December of 1974. It is considered by many to be a fantastic achievement in the world of erotic film, and was a hit at the box office. The movie stars Alain Cuny as Mario, and Sylvia Kristel as Emmanuelle.
Emmanuelle should not be mistaken for pornography. While the movie certainly is erotic and packed full of sexual content, most of it is shown in a very natural way that might disappoint viewers looking for something more.
The movie starts off with the very young Emmanuelle, who is married to an older man named Mario. She has an awakening in the movie where she realizes that she is actually bisexual. Many watching the movie will assume that she would prefer to be with only women. Emmanuelle and her husband share a very open relationship, and he does not mind her interest in women. In fact, Kristel’s character does not seem bothered by any of her husband’s extramarital affairs either.
What should not be overlooked about the movie is the extraordinary scenery. ‘Emmanuelle’ was filmed in Bangkok, Thailand, which provides a beautiful location. The music in the movie is very impressive as well.
The movie was clearly designed for a male audience. There is enough action to keep the movie moving along at a steady pace. Some will notice that portions of the movie have become severely dated as the movie was released more than three decades ago. Several sequels followed ‘Emmanuelle’, but none drew the same amount of attention.
