Sadly, ‘The Godfather Part III’ was very disappointing. At times the dialogue was utterly and unbelievably ridiculous. The new characters were not believable and were not able to inspire the same interest, appeal or classic personas as did their predecessors. There is an absolute need for the film, as we must know the fate of Michael Corleone, the family business and his family members, but that is all this movie provides; a conclusion to a compelling story. Though the ending does seem likely and probable, this movie does not carry the same intrigue or familiar traits that ‘The Godfather Part 1 and 2’ continue to provide, even decades later. Parts 1 and 2 are enthralling, with recognisable and useful quotes that are still highly appealing.
The portrayals of intense characters that are entrenched in our psyches are missing in ‘The Godfather Part III’ and the movie does little to add to the Corleone saga. The storyline had the potential to provide an interesting and insightful link from the “old ways” to how the family transformed itself and adapted to modern America, but it wasn’t enough. This movie did one thing only; it ended the saga. Even Al Pacino, with all his ability and talent, was not able to save the film. The dialogue given to the enormous historical character of Michael Corleone was insulting and far beneath what we have come to know. The rest of the actors paled in comparison to Pacino’s performance, which only exacerbated the slow death of the legendary Godfather.
