All pet birds will get parasites of one kind or another throughout their lives. Some parasites like fleas can transfer to other pets. Most bird parasites can be easily eliminated. Please do not use this article in the place of your veterinarian’s advice.
Bird Pests
Parasites that can be found on pet birds include mites and bird fleas (which also like rodents). You can usually see them crawling on your bird. A bird that scratches more than usual needs to be inspected for pests. Many over the counter bird pest sprays are available, but if they don’t do the job, you must take your bird to the vet.
Bird fleas do not prefer to feast on the blood of people, but they may take a bite out of you for a taste. If your dog or cat has just been treated for fleas, the chemicals on them may get your bird ill. Keep the treated pets apart for a couple of days.
Flies, Moths and Wasps
These insects aren’t pests to your birds as much as they are a pest to you. Don’t just use your usual methods of dealing with these pests. Aerosol insecticide sprays contain chemicals that can get your pet bird very sick. You need to get repellents specifically for using around a birdcage.
Moths, fruit flies, and wasps can generally be controlled with the use of all in one traps that lure the insects with pheromones to fall into a trap and drown. Be sure to place these traps away from any curious beaks.
