Hotel for Dogs

This is a movie that the whole family can watch together and the adults, just as much as the children, will enjoy it. It’s funny, but it’s heart-warming too.

The story is about a brother and sister who are hopelessly mired in the foster care system. Their parents were killed and since that time, they’ve been living in a variety of foster homes. Of course, they are currently placed with typically mean-spirited foster parents, whose sole reason for taking in foster children is to pay the bills while they work on their budding “rock star” careers.

Fortunately for these kids, they have a social worker who is willing to go to bat for them and “cover” for them when they get into scrapes together, which they frequently do. They have adopted a dog, Friday, which they’ve kept with them through five previous foster home placements, without the knowledge of their foster parents. In fact, more recently, they’ve decided to set up a hotel for stray dogs, to make sure that “every stray has a place to stay.” Of course, their foster parents know nothing of this enterprise.

This film hysterically depicts their antics, including breaking into the local dog pound and releasing the puppies being held there. There are also some heart-warming scenes where their social worker even discusses their case with his wife, saying he wants to give these kids a chance with a family that will recognize their need to remain together. These kids just want a place where they can make a home for their beloved dogs, even if that place is one where they can’t live together in the same family.

I enjoyed this film just as much as my kids did. It’s a definite family film, full of the kind of lessons we may want to teach our kids, but just don’t know how.
