This is one of those movies that makes you say, “If only that could really happen.” It’s the story of Holly Kennedy (played by Hilary Swank), who is reeling from the recent death of her husband, Gerry, to a fast-growing brain tumour. She is left a young widow, living alone in New York City and wondering just how she is going to continue living without her beloved other half.
However, Gerry has left Holly a wonderful gift: a series of letters he wrote specifically to help her deal with her grief. Gerry knew he was dying, and he knew his wife was going to have trouble when he was gone, so he wanted to encourage her to go on and make a life for herself without him.
The neat thing about Gerry’s letters is that it seems he keeps writing them, even after he passes on. Months after his death, Holly keeps finding these letters, each one containing a specific piece of advice to help her deal with a situation she is going through at that very time.
Holly’s friends are concerned about these letters. They feel that until Holly puts them away and moves on with her life, she will be mired forever in the past. The amazing thing is that it is these letters that keep Holly going and help her to find a rich and meaningful new life after the death of the husband she so much loved.
I thoroughly enjoyed this film and think you will too.
