I thought it was time to watch this movie again, especially in preparation of going to see the new Star Trek picture in theatres this week.
From childhood I had always enjoyed the original Star Trek television series, and as I grew older and the concept went through many changes, such as a new cast, new premise, new Enterprise, and whatnot, it lost its appeal for me. I wanted to get back to a Star Trek I was familiar with and thoroughly enjoyed.
This film did that for me. While there are some scenes that go on for too long, such as the one when the crew is on the shuttle heading to the newly renovated Enterprise, I feel the film certainly had its redeeming moments. The same cast of characters I knew and loved from my youth were still there, and still pretty much lived in their own personalities.
I liked how human interest was still a big part of this movie, as it was in the series. Yes, Star Trek is science fiction, make no mistake about that, but it contains the human quality that is so important to good science fiction. This film still had it. I especially enjoyed the scene where Kirk tells his successor, Will, that he will be taking over the command of the Enterprise. He is clearly the captain and clearly in control, yet he tries to treat Will with compassion, realizing that he has invested much in his upcoming mission to command the vessel, and not wanting to strip him of his enthusiasm.
I enjoyed this film and it is one that I can well imagine going back to view again and again. It’s just the kind of film that never grows old.
