Ferret Rescues

Ferret rescue organizations are non-profit groups that take in lost, abandoned, unwanted and ill ferrets. These groups and individuals are dedicated to providing care and sanctuary for ferrets in distress, while constantly searching for suitable adoptive homes for the ferrets in their care. They offer ferrets of all ages and colours for permanent adoption or fostering, a process by which ill or aging ferrets are found temporary homes with loving caregivers.

Another important function of ferret rescues is the outreach work they do. They maintain a presence in their communities, through fairs and shows, to spread awareness about the pleasures of ferret ownership, and to dispel some of the myths about the animal. Several organizations provide boarding services and advice on the proper care and keeping of ferrets as well.

Rescued ferrets are typically tested for common diseases like heartworm and parvo virus; are given boosters of essential vaccines such as rabies and canine distemper; and are spayed or neutered before being made available for fostering or adoption. Many ferret rescue groups also work to rehabilitate injured animals so they can be found new homes once their recovery is complete. Most rescues rely on public donations and fundraising events to help defray the cost of medical treatments, vaccines and medications, supplies, and food for ferrets in the shelter.

Listings of local ferret rescue organizations can be found through a quick Internet search. Donations of money, food, supplies and time are always appreciated, and will help ensure that sick and neglected ferrets receive the care they need.
