Actor
Born on the 31st March 1971 in the small town of Crieff, Scotland, Ewan McGregor was destined for the movies. Both of Ewan’s parents were educators, so much emphasis was placed on his schooling as he grew up. However, there was also a touch of show business in the family, as he is the nephew of actors Denis Lawson and Sheila Gish.
About six months before graduating from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, he landed a leading role in a six-part BBC mini series ‘Lipstick on Your Collar’ and has been working ever since. McGregor has had success in indie, art house, and mainstream films and broke onto the scene as Mark Renton in Danny Boyle’s ‘Trainspotting’ in 1996. That role brought him a cult following. More recently he has gained another kind of following portraying Obi-Wan Kenobi in the ‘Star Wars’ prequel trilogy.
In 1995, McGregor married French production designer Eve Mavrakis. The two met while shooting ‘Kavanagh Q.C.’ They have a nice little family including daughters, Clara Mathilde (born in 1996), Ester Rose (born in 2001), and a daughter adopted from Mongolia in 2006, Jamiyan. Incredibly private, McGregor will not discuss his family or the location of his home in interviews or in public. The family relocated from the London area to Los Angeles in 2008.
In addition to acting, McGregor is an avid motorcyclist. He embarked on a journey with friends Claudio von Planta and Charley Boorman that started in London and extended to New York, Central Europe, Ukraine, Russia, Mongolia, and Canada. The trip inspired a best-selling book, ‘Long Way Round’, and a television series.
