Chlamydia is one of the most prevalent types of bacterial STDs known today. It can be spread through any type of contact with the bacteria. This includes vaginal, anal and oral sex as well as transmission through the hands by touching the infected genital area and then touching another area of the body. This means that the infection can be spread form one area of the body to another in the same or different people.
The symptoms of Chlamydia are often so slight that they go undeclared. Some of the symptoms include painful urination as well as irritation and itching in the genital area. Women may have a disruption in the menstrual cycle along with headaches, nausea, vomiting and infertility. Men may experience a painful swelling of the testes as well as inflammation of the scrotum.
There are treatments available for this STD. If the Chlamydia is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems such as blindness and infertility. Men who are left untreated may develop an infection of the epididymis which will be characterized by inflammation, painful urination and at times, a discharge from the penis.
This infection is hard to detect due to its lack of symptoms. If a person thinks they may have this infection, they should seek medical attention immediately and inform any partners with whom they have been. There is effective treatment, but only if the Chlamydia is quickly and properly diagnosed.
