Seeing someone you love dealing with an illness can be one of the most difficult things we have to deal with in life, no matter what age we are. However, as a teenager this is definitely one of the more painful experiences you may have. It can be difficult to know how to cope.
While you may find that you want to avoid the reality of the situation, it is probably best to get all of the facts so that you know what is really going on. Speak to your friend/family member and tell them that you want to understand. Make sure you know the name of the illness and what the symptoms are. You can then ask them to talk you through what treatment they will be receiving and what the likely outcome is. This is probably the question you would rather avoid, but it is best to prepare yourself. It is also best to check whether it is alright to discuss this with others as some people choose to keep details of their illness private.
The best way you can support someone when they are ill is to show them that you love them. Ask if there is anything that you can do to help. Show them that you want to be involved, to feel like you are doing something. You can also come up with ways to take their mind off things. It is also important that you find some time to relax and enjoy yourself and most important of all is that you don’t feel guilty for doing so. You have a lot to deal with and you will be of most help to your loved one when you are relaxed and happy.
