Going away to a strange place with new people is not easy and lots of people will begin to miss their home and parents.
If you begin to feel like this the most important thing to remember is that it is completely normal. You are in new surroundings and around people that you do not know. It will take time to become more familiar with your surroundings and get used to the new people. However, over time you will become more comfortable.
A large number of students end up dropping out after only a few days due to homesickness. This is something that is unavoidable unless you are willing to stick it out while you get used to things; if someone did not feel just a little apprehensive of being in a new place then there would be something wrong. Talk to other people and try to make new friends. Those feelings of missing home will soon disappear once you begin forming new social groups. Having other people to talk to that are in the same situation will be great for your confidence, and soon you will wonder what you were ever worried about.
The worst thing that you can do is lock yourself away from your new classmates. If you feel that you are unable to handle the situation get in touch with your university’s student support department for advice and help. Also, speak with your Student Union and find out if there are any activities or societies you can join that interest you – it will be a great way of making new friends.
