Apprenticeships – What To Expect

If you are lucky enough to be successful at interview and get that all-important phone call that says ‘Congratulations you have been successful we would like to offer you the job’ you may begin to wonder what you have let yourself in for. You have made it into the world of work, but what happens next,

Apprentices go to work every day as if they were any other member of staff, but one day a week they will normally have to attend a local college that offers basic skills in their chosen field. This is excellent for you and for the company, as an apprentice is pretty hard work for the company, as you cannot be left unsupervised for any period of time. For you it means the chance to get some more theoretical learning in and mix with other young people in a similar situation so you can build up a network of support amongst other people your own age.

On your days at work you will normally be paired with a professional or be part of a team depending on the work set-up, but you should still be assigned one person as your mentor, who you go to as the first point of contact for any issues that crop up. You then work with them, sometimes doing basic tasks on your own, other times watching and learning from one of the professionals before trying yourself while they watch and supervise you.
