Once year 11 is finished you are going to be asked to make a decision about where to go next, whether you want to remain in education or whether you want to leave and get a job. One option that isn’t often considered, but which is certainly worth thinking about, is retakes. This means studying for one more year to retake GCSE subjects that didn’t go according to plan.
Keeping this option in the back of your mind is a good idea, as it will help you to keep focused. For those who really want to go to university, getting good grades can be very important and it may be worth retaking some subjects before you move on.
Most schools can’t have you repeat year 11 at school, as the rules do change slightly when you do retakes, so you will probably need to move to a college. In some cases you could combine a retake with moving some of your stronger subjects to ‘A’ level at the same time. You will find retakes are something you have to pay for, but as mentioned earlier it could be paramount to your overall career, so it may be an expense you and your parents are happy to deal with.
Remember, it is not the end of the world if you do not get the grades you need, but you do need to think about why this was, as you definitely don’t want to make the same mistakes again.
