Career Choices – Customer Services

Customer services are big businesses; companies want you to believe that they offer the best, so a good strong customer service team is essential, whether face to face in a shop or council office, or over the telephone like mobile phone companies and banks.

If you think you would like a career in customer services, then you have to be confident that you are good with people, because, as mentioned above, some customer services are purely telephone based so the customer cannot see your body language, therefore what you say and how you say it are key.

Customer services normally require a good standard of education, with good GCSE grades; there are now NVQs in customer care. However, many companies will train you on the job so it is also a school leaver opportunity. If you do decide to do your NVQ first, then you will need to apply to college and the standard requirements of 5 GCSEs at grade ‘C’ and above normally apply.

Good manners and the ability to stay calm are always a bonus, as many people will call customer services when they have a problem, and this can mean they come across as aggressive and demanding. An excellent customer services assistant will be able to calm them and leave them feeling reassured that their problem will be dealt with swiftly, but more importantly that they are a very important person to you and the company.
