Driving Licence

The nearer you get to your 17th birthday the more excited you’ll get, as you know that learning to drive is just around the corner. For many young people this is high on their list of things to do as soon as they are legally old enough. However, this is something that may be much easier if you think about it in advance, as learning to drive is not cheap and neither is owning and running your own car.

Having a driving licence and access to a car can make many aspects of getting a job easier: you can work further away from home and take jobs that require you to drive as part of the job.

Driving lessons are not cheap, but you may be lucky and find that one of your parents is prepared to teach you. However, you may well find that your parents would rather you got professional lessons in a car with dual controls, as this is safer for the initial learning process.

You may decide to try and save some of your money, whether this is from a part time job or just from pocket money, for a couple of years in advance of your 17th Birthday, so that you have some money to pay for driving lessons or to put towards the cost of a car. It is quite common to ask family members for driving lessons for your birthday, and many learner-driver companies offer ‘birthday packages’.
