Gap year in Chile

Making up the majority of the western coast of South America and encompassing the stunning peaks of the Andes, Chile has become a highly sought after location for gap-year travellers who are looking for adventure. It is also a popular place for volunteering, and can offer both community work-based schemes and wildlife conservation. Accommodation prices in Chile can be reasonable in comparison to other destinations, and eating out will not break your budget.

The capital, Santiago, is located in the middle of the country, and sits underneath the snow capped Andes. Over five million people call this historic city home, making up nearly 25% of the country’s population. Some of the famous sights in the city include the Fine Art Museum, the former Congress building and, of course, the renowned Palacio de La Moneda – the seat of the president.

Santiago will provide a unique insight into South American life, but out in the rural areas you will be able to find some fascinating indigenous culture. Chile is also proving to be a common destination for people looking to learn Spanish abroad, as there are many placements available in towns and villages across the country.

Chile is also ideal for those wishing to experience a diverse landscape. As well as the rock climbing, hiking and winter sports activities found in the Andes, Chile is home to the driest desert in the world, the Atacama Desert which is home to the Pan de Azúcar National Park and the Pampa del Tamarugal National Reserve.
