GCSE Choice – Geography

Geography is one of a group of GCSE choices, and in most schools you can only pick one from the group – this is normal in other areas too, which is why choices can be so difficult. In this group you are looking at Geography and History, and possibly in some schools Humanities. Geography may well be a subject you cannot wait to get away from, in which case you do not need to choose it. However, for those who find it interesting, be assured that you are choosing an excellent course that gives you plenty of learning opportunities.

The syllabus is very broad and you will get a chance to go out and about on field trips which will help you in certain areas, depending on where in the country you live and what is on your doorstep. The course requires you to look at agriculture, industry, population, river landscapes and processes to name just a few, so you can imagine the scope for practical work.

Again this is a subject the school will introduce you to before the choices need to be made, so you will have some understanding before you begin, and it is not all just looking at maps to see what is where. Although there is an element of this, the course is made up of so much more. You will get to study climates and weather systems, and the course ends with an examination testing what you have learnt in class.
