GCSE Choices – Drama

GCSE Drama is another ‘option’, and you will have been introduced to the type of work involved in previous school years. Year 9 in particular will be tailored to giving you the best indication of work as possible, so by the time you are asked to make your choices you should have a clear idea of whether or not this could be the GCSE for you.

As it is completely optional, you should find yourself in a class of people who all enjoy drama, which makes the practical work easier, as gone are the students who felt very uncomfortable acting. The drama students tend to get involved with the end of term productions, whether it is on the stage or back stage learning about lighting and production techniques, so there is sure to be something that catches your imagination.

The course requires you to submit two pieces of coursework and sit a written exam, but you will receive a lot of support with the coursework and be shown examples of what is required before you begin. You will need to get involved in analysing the work of others, act out scenes from famous plays and help critique the work of fellow students. You will also take part in discussions for example on how a fellow student creates emotion with words, and whether he succeeds – you can therefore expect your work to receive the same treatment, but it is an excellent way to learn and get better.
