GCSE Choices – English

GCSE English is another compulsory subject that all students from primary age right through to GSCE age have to study. This counts as one of your GCSE options and there is no choice to be had here. The course itself is varied and interesting, and is another of the subjects that many employers hold in high regard, so you will do well to try and get a good grade here.

For the GCSE English exam you will be required to sit three examination papers: two are classed as English and one paper is for English Literature. The course will be based on you learning a mixture of both. This will involve some creative writing on your part, some book studies where you will read a book as a class and then consider what the writer is really saying and what he wants the reader to feel, and some work on the technical side of the English language, both written and spoken.

There is also an aspect of coursework and an oral examination which between them form 40% of the overall course mark. Many people really enjoy coursework as it does not come with the pressure of the examination hall and allows you to be creative and try your best, allowing for time to rewrite and edit your work before you finally have to hand it in. There will be practice coursework assignments before the real thing, so you can see how you perform and get advice.
