GSCE Food comes in the technology group of options, and you do need to choose at least one of them. The options vary from school to school and can include graphics, textiles or mechanics.
In GCSE Food you will have the chance to take further the things you experienced in other years – the school system is actually quite clever and gives you a chance to try all of the GCSE subjects on offer in the years leading up to your choices, so you will have had some experience of Food Technology before you need to decide for real.
Food Technology will be a mix of practical cooking, which in itself is an excellent life skill for both boys and girls, and the theoretical side of food safety and hygiene which means you will know how to prepare and store food in the correct way so you are not in danger and do not get ill from badly cooked or stored food.
You will normally need to supply the ingredients, so you have to be sure your parents or carers are happy to do this, but you can then take the results of your hard work home and share them with your family – which should go down well! This course teaches you to think for yourself and to be more self-sufficient, which will be great if you go on to university and suddenly find yourself cooking and cleaning with no parents to help!
