As you get further through your school life, future job prospects are going to get more and more interesting; you will be asked more often what you see yourself doing, and whatever you answer is you will need to think about attending a job interview at some stage. Don’t panic – stay calm, you can deal with this, and if you want a part time job to earn some extra cash whilst you are still studying your first job interview experience may be closer than you think.
The format is sadly not set in stone; it would actually be easier if all interviews followed a set pattern, but they don’t. However, there are some general things that you will find work for all job interviews, so learning these is an excellent starting point.
Firstly, you need to be smart. No matter what you wear to do the job, go to the interview dressed smartly, make it appropriate, for example, if you are a girl going for a job as a stable hand, smart jodhpurs and a clean crisp shirt would be more appropriate than a knee length skirt and heels; you need to give the impression that you understand the role. Jeans would be a definite ‘NO’ if you were looking to get a job as a hotel receptionist. Basically common sense applies, be smart and clean, make sure your hair is brushed, and if long tie it back. This looks smarter and means you cannot fiddle with it!
