Motorbike Licence

For some people, waiting for their 17th birthday to get their driving lessons underway is almost completely unbearable, and it seems to never arrive. However, there is another option that kicks in when you are 16, and this is acquiring your basic motorbike licence.

Not all parents are happy with this idea, as bikes often get bad press. However, at 16 you would only be allowed a smaller bike, and it does mean that you will have your own transport and independence a year earlier than if you wait for a car licence. It is also a cheaper option; bikes cost far less that cars, and the lessons and test are cheaper too. You will need to invest in a good quality helmet, jacket and gloves.

In order to ride a bike on the roads at the age of 16 you must first get your CBT certificate as well as a provisional driving licence. Driving licence application forms can be found in most post offices, but they do take a couple of weeks to get through the red tape, so it is worth being organised and applying as soon as you are able. Once you have your licence you can book your CBT, which stands for Compulsory Basic Training. To do this you do not have to own a bike as many centres have a few to spare. The bike must be no bigger than a 50cc engine, but this still gets you to your destination faster than walking and beats relying on public transport.
