Passports for Young Travellers

Nearly all countries will require that each visitor has a valid passport, even young children who were once able to be named on the passport of their parent or guardian. However, if you are travelling separately you will need to have your own. It will be important to take note of the processing time for passports if you have already planned when you are going to travel.

In the UK it takes an average of three weeks to process an application, and the more accurate the information you can provide the less chance there is of any delays occurring. For an application for your first passport you will need to be over the age of 18 and have documents to prove your identity, such as your birth certificate as well as the birth certificate for your mother or father. The regulations will vary slightly depending on your circumstances, and it may take longer to gather all the information that is required.

The current cost for an adult 10-year 32-page passport is just under £80, but separate child passports will be slight cheaper and will also be processed in a shorter time. Child passports can be valid for five-years, and even if you will become 18-within this time period your passport will still remain valid. The current cost in the UK is £49 for a child passport.

Application forms for passports can be found at your local post office. There is often the option of express delivery, but this will be considerably more expensive.
