Over the last number of years, an increasing number of households across the world have taken it upon themselves to ‘cut the cord’ and switch from traditionally delivered cable TV to watching online cable TV. For many, however, this is a surprisingly daunting task, and deciding to make this decision can bring many to the point of frustration. This need not be the case, however, and in this regard please see below for a number of things to consider when making the decision to ‘cut the cord’!
How’s your internet?
If you are switching to watching cable TV online, one of the first things you should consider is how fast your internet is. Since online cable TV requires a broadband internet connection to be delivered, unlike traditional cable TV, it’s important to ensure you have a strong and stable connection that will ensure an uninterrupted delivery. Netflix and other similar online cable TV streaming services suggest a minimum of 5mbps for HD streaming. Unfortunately, however, this is a bare minimum and doesn’t guarantee decent quality. If you intend to stream in 1080p or 4K you will most definitely need something with higher speeds!
Having a dedicated device
One of the second most important considerations when switching to watching cable tv online relates to the device you intend to use to do the streaming. Whilst streaming can be done through a laptop or desktop PC, this medium is not optimal and may be difficult to connect to your home entertainment system. As such, it might be a better option to purchase a dedicated streaming device which you will use to watch cable tv online. A dedicated device might also potentially offer better download speeds without the slowdown you might experience on a laptop or desktop PC.
