The Slovak Cuvac has gone by many names, including the Slovak Chuvach and the Tatransky Cuvac. The breed originates from Slovakia, which is why it has such a name. They have been around since at least the 1600s. They were primarily used as sheep herding dogs for hundreds of years. Herders would use these dogs to help protect the sheep from the wolves that occupied the mountains in Slovakia. The Slovak Cuvac breed also helped keep the sheep in line and would herd them to their next destination. Eventually, the wolf population grew sparse in those regions.
This, coupled with the institution of modern herding practices, made the Slovak Cuvac breed become endangered. They were very close to extinction in the 1950s until veterinarians and dog breeders took over the breed. As a breed, Slovak Cuvac is now doing well although they do not have the same kind of high population that they once had.
The Slovak Cuvac is a medium and hefty-size dog breed. They tend to weigh between 31 and 44 kilograms. Slovak Cuvac dogs average a height between 59 and 70 centimetres. Typically, female Slovak Cuvac dogs are a bit lighter and shorter than their male counterparts. However, these proportions are just averages.
While most dog breeds have multiple colours in which their coat can come, this is not the case for the Slovak Cuvac. Instead, these dogs are almost always white and it is rare to find any variation in the colour of their medium-length coat.
