The Plott Hound was originally used for hunting wild boar in Germany. In the mid-eighteenth century, these wild boar hounds were brought over from Germany to North America by a man named Jonathan Plott. Once in the United States, they created a breed standard and named the dog the Plott Hound after the man.
Although the Plott Hound does not hunt wild boar as much as it did in Germany, it is still used for hunting to this day. Plott Hounds use their heightened sense of smell to help their hunters find wild animals. They are also good at attacking animals if the need arises. They have a large amount of stamina and endurance and can be used for long hunting trips. They are also very good in the water, which makes them adept at hunting water fowl.
Female Plott Hounds are significantly smaller than the male variety. For instance, they average a height of 50 to 58 centimetres whilst males stand between 50 and 71 centimetres. This is also the case for Plott Hound weight. Females weigh between 18 and 25 kilograms whilst males weigh between 23 and 27 kilograms. Although these are averages, female Plott Hounds can still grow to be quite large.
Plott Hounds are fast and active. They need daily exercise and a lot of room to play. It is inadvisable to keep them in a small apartment during the day. Instead, it is best to provide Plott Houds with a large yard and daily exercise.
