Canadian Eskimo Dog – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Canadian Eskimo Dog is the only indigenous dog of Canada. Also known as Inuit Husky and Qimmiq (in Inuit) they have been part of the Canadian north for over 2000 years. Originally the Eskimo dog numbered in the thousands as they worked and lived with the Inuit and those brave enough to face the frozen north. Today the breed is close to extinction with only 500 registered purebred dogs.

This canine resembles the wolf in appearance. The only real difference is the tail. It is shorter in length and more curved than the wolf. This is a very athletic breed, which is muscular, powerful, and carries itself in a dominant fashion. The body is not about the speed of the creature in fact it is not known for its rapid movements but rather for its working capabilities. The two genders are typically easy to identify as females are feminine and males are far more masculine.

This breed needs a lot of exercise, more so than most athletic breeds. The Canadian Eskimo Dog needs intense activities. If this type of stimulation is not provided, their health can seriously decline and they will resent their home life. They also need a lot of grooming which makes this a canine that requires a lot of time and care. Only those that are willing to devote that amount of time and energy to this breed should consider them as their pet.
