The Braque Francais is a gun dog originating in the Gascony region of France. They are an old pointer breed descendants from Italian and Spanish pointers. There are two breeds of this type of canine; one is the larger breed (Gascogne) which can weigh between 50 to 75 lbs (23 to 34 kg). The other is a petite (Pyrenees) version, which can weigh between 40 to 55 lbs (18 to 25 kg). Another common name for this dog is a French Pointer. While the Braque Francais is often used in France, they have not gained popularity in other regions of the world.
This dog is very versatile and can handle a number of duties while hunting. It can retrieve, flush out game, track and trail, etc. Their versatility does not end there. The Braque Francais can hunt and perform on virtually all terrain. Whatever the circumstance or situation, this breed can adapt.
The Pyrenees type of the Braque Francais is a slightly smaller dog. It is a medium sized canine with a finer, softer coat. They have a mottled brown body more so then that of the larger type of this breed. The Gascogne is a little bigger and is classified as a large dog size with a thick coarser kind of coat.
Both types of the Braque Francais dogs are typically friendly, outgoing, docile animals. They are sociable and can get along with people of all ages and even pets. If extensive training is desired it should be gentle, as this breed does not respond well to harsh methods. Introducing the dog early on to the over all lifestyle is highly beneficial.
