Ciobanesc de Bucovina – Dog Breed Information and Pictures

The Ciobanesc de Bucovina is also known as the Bucovina Shepherd Dog. This breed originated in Romania. It was widely used by the shepherds of the Carpathian Mountains. Not only are these dogs highly skilled in herding with little to no help from humans but they are also effective guard dogs that could and would guard land, homes and livestock.

Perhaps one of the most distinguishing features of the Ciobanesc de Bucovina is its massive head. The muzzle is in the shape of a cone. Their jaws are powerfully strong and are a definite intimidation factor for predators and trespassers. The body is well proportioned, very muscular and presents authority.

The fur coat on the Ciobanesc de Bucovina is thick, straight and hard. The neck commonly forms a mane. The tail tends to be bushy and full. It is covered by a longer length hair that is thicker than that on the body. The coat colours are usually a combination of the following: white, black, and charcoaled. The patterns can be in the form of patches or brindle.

The Ciobanesc de Bucovina is a very calm breed yet can become a fierce protector in a second. They are highly devoted to their owners and they adore children. They will use their loud bark with authority to alert their owner or family to any kind of danger or threat before combating. This breed is not fit for a small home or an apartment. They need land to roam and patrol.
