The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is closely related to the Siberian Husky dog breed. The Seppala Siberian Sleddog is named after the man who played a big part in the creation of the breed. In the early twentieth century, Leonhard Seppala imported dogs from Siberia. He trained them to become accomplished sled dogs, hence the name. They became popular between 1914 and 1917 when they consistently won the All-Alaska Sweepstakes dog sledding competition.
Unlike most dog breeds, the Seppala Siberian Sleddog has never been used as a show dog. Breeders have been vigilant about keeping the dog out of the spotlight. Rather, breeders would prefer the Seppala Siberian Sleddog breed be kept as working sleddogs. While they have been recently recognized as their own breed in Canadian and American kennel clubs, they still are kept on their own in sled dog teams.
Seppala Siberian Sleddogs are average-sized. They tend to weigh between 18 and 23 kilograms. They often reach heights between 56 and 58 centimetres tall on average. Since they aren’t used for dog shows, they don’t have specific coat colours. They have a wide range of colours, including the colour of their eyes. The Seppala Siberian Sleddog’s eyes can be blue, brown, black, or any combination of all three.
It is typical for Seppala Siberian Sleddogs to bond not just with other dogs of their breed, but with their human owners as well. They are loyal and strong and have a high work ethic. They are happy and willing to do their job.
