This dog, also called the Scandinavian Hound, is a hybrid species from Scandinavia. Eurohounds are created by crossing Alaskan Huskies with Pointers. They were developed specifically for competitive sled-dog racing in which they excel. Huskies have been used for sledding for centuries. However, when it became a competitive sport, there was a need for a more specific breed. The Eurohound was the result, combining the Husky’s hardy sledding ability with the enthusiasm and speed of the Pointer.
A careful crossbreeding program has produced a formidable sporting dog that is used in competitions across the world. The Eurohound is a true hybrid, being a cross of two established breeds with totally independent gene pools. There is frequent “backbreeding” in which first generation (50:50) crosses are put with one of the original parent breeds to enhance specific traits. The gene ratio of the subsequent litter will, therefore, be different. This leads to great variation between dogs that are chosen depending on the type of racing they are to do.
The coat of a first generation Eurohound is short and generally black with white blazing. The dog is of medium height and around 20kg (45lbs) in weight. The build is light and athletic. These traits make the dog suitable for sprint racing. However, dogs with a lower proportion of Pointer genes are more like Huskies and better suited to endurance races. The retention of some Pointer characteristics ensures that the dog still has the speed to power it over the finish line.
