The Bracco Italiano was originally bred to be a pointing canine but has developed excellent skills as a gun dog. As the name would imply, the breed originated in Italy. The Bracco Italiano is thought to be a cross between Segugio Italiano (sight hound) and the Asiatic Mastiff. One of only two native gundog breeds from Italy, this breed dates back to the 4th and 5th century B.C.
The general appearance and physique is well balanced and powerful. The body is square presenting strong muscular tone and a uniquely shaped head. They are a tough breed. The Bracco Italiano is used for an array of hunting needs yet they are a calm, loving and docile toward humans. These dogs can be easily trained as they pick up what is needed of them rather quickly.
The fur coat on the Bracco Italiano is short and dense. It also has a naturally glossy sheen to it, which makes it look healthy. The hair is hard on the body but the face, head and neck should be fine, soft and supple. Generally, the colours of this breed are white, orange, amber or brown. Patterns can vary but black is not a typical colour. Overall, the Bracco displays the physical characteristics typical of pointer-type breeds but with a tendency towards being lankier and longer.
This canine is very loving and devoted to its owners and family. They need human companionship. They are a loyal and affectionate breed. However, they do need ample exercise and love to hunt as this is their favourite activity. They are intelligent yet they do also have a stubborn streak. Formal training is not usually necessary.
