The Chinese Imperial Dog originated in China. Originally, they were considered the same breed as the Shih Tzu; however, as of 2005 the Chinese Imperial has been classified as a separate and unique breed. This tiny lion-faced dog was a constant companion to the emperor’s family within the Imperial Palace.
The Imperials are considered part of the toy classification in size. This tiny dog is also considered a rare breed. Due to the size of this dog, it does very well in small homes or apartments and does not need a lot of room to roam.
When looking at this small canine the face of the Chinese Imperial Dog is sweet and innocent. The structure is compact and they actually have a well-balanced and muscular structure. Their muscles are appropriate for their size; they are not bulky or strong.
This dog is not a protector, or a working dog by any means. Their sole function is primarily to be a companion and pet. They are playful, affectionate, loving, trusting and outgoing. They love to be pampered and be a lap baby. However, they do have behaviour problems if they do not have a human to portray the leadership role. They need the leadership and direction from their owner. This will help curb any serious attitude and behavioural issues.
This breed is considered high maintenance due to the exercise needs and grooming requirements. People that are interested in the Chinese Imperial Dog should be willing to devote time and energy to this little canine to ensure a healthy body, mind and coat.
